Appointment system update

As of Monday 14th August, this practice will be working in partnership with Care UK to provide additional telephone calls to our patients and improve access to doctors.

The Care UK clinicians will work in exactly the same way as our local clinicians. Medical records will be accessed by Care UK clinicians through a secure network, and your information will not be used by any other third parties. Patients may ‘Opt-Out’ of the service offered by notifying the practice.

On many days, we are now at capacity therefore we are moving back to the system where telephone appointments are reserved for clinically urgent issues. Please telephone before 11.00 am to request a telephone consultation or a home visit.

We still have a duty doctor each day, to meet urgent patient needs. This will continue to involve a telephone consultation in the first instance. Starting in September will be offering an additional time for face to face appointments with the doctor and we will have a reduced number of telephone appointments with our doctors to give more time for face to face appointments.

Any patients requesting a face-to-face appointment – for example, vaccinations or examinations – are booked with a duty doctor or their GP. The majority of patients calling for a GP appointment can be managed over the phone. These patients are given a time slot for a call back with a Practice Assist GP, who will try to resolve their problems on the phone. If required, this GP will then make any necessary onward referrals, either to your own GP, or to other services.

We still have pre-bookable face to face routine appointments and our reception staff will be pleased to send a message the doctor for patient queries regarding non-clinical and administrative issues.

If you have signed up for online access to the system you will still be able to continue to book routine face to face consultations either on line via SystmOne access. The following appointments continue to be booked directly through reception:

    • Practice nurse appointments

    • Phlebotomy

    • Ante-natal

    • Chronic disease annual reviews – Diabetes – Heart disease - Asthma

    • Dressings and routine travel advice

    • Children’s immunisations

    • And follow up appointments if recorded by your doctor.

When we reach capacity our reception staff will advise you when our doctors are only able to take very urgent appointments. Please use 111, urgent care drop in centre or seek advice from your pharmacist.

The impact of these changes will take some time to take effect and the new system will be reviewed in October. Thank you for your co-operation. We hope you find the new service beneficial.

Please Note

Patients wishing to Opt-Out of this service should complete the Care UK & North Laine Medical Centre Opt-In / Opt-Out form available at reception.

Yours sincerely,

Mike Stemp
